Important Things to Know Before Installing Heating Film
When installing heating film, many people tend to focus only on wiring or thermostat settings.
However, in reality, small mistakes made during the early stage of heating film installation
can often lead to problems such as leakage current, overheating, or damage to floor finishing materials.
In this article, we summarize important precautions to know before heating film installation,
covering everything from insulation work to heating film layout, taping, and terminal connection,

1. Why should insulation be kept about 1 cm away from the wall?
The first step before installing heating film is floor preparation followed by insulation installation.
As a basic rule, the insulation should be installed with a gap of about 1 cm from the wall.
If water caused by wall condensation or cleaning flows onto the insulation,
it may reach the heating film and cause electrical leakage.
The gap between the wall and the insulation prevents such water movement.
2. Heating film must never overlap
If heating film overlaps, heat is generated simultaneously at the same location,
which may result in localized overheating.
This can lead to damage to the heating film itself or deformation of the floor finishing material.
Therefore, heating film must always be installed without overlapping.
3. Allowable overlap guidelines for heating film
- The heating (carbon) area must never overlap.
- Overlapping copper busbar (electrode) areas is not recommended.
- Only non-heating margin areas may overlap minimally.
4. Heating film orientation – copper busbar facing downward
Heating film should be installed so that the printed text is readable in the normal direction,
with the copper busbar facing downward toward the floor.
This helps reduce the risk of damage during installation
and lowers potential electrical risks over long-term use.
5. Taping should be kept to a minimum
There is air between the heating film and the insulation,
and this air expands when heated.
If all four sides are fully sealed with tape,
the heating film may bulge upward.
Therefore, taping should be done only to the extent necessary
to prevent movement during installation.
6. Terminal connection methods for heating film
In typical residential installations, both methods are commonly used:
connecting terminals on top of the film, or inserting terminals between
the copper busbar and the silver layer.
However, for high-power heating film or long installation lengths,
the insertion method with a larger contact area is more effective
in preventing overheating.
